• What are their qualifications and specialties?
• What lab does the dentist use, and what are its qualifications?
• Does the dentist have before and after photos for the procedure you’re undergoing?
• Does the dentist carry malpractice insurance?
• Is your treatment plan prioritized into phases and planned over a reasonable amount of time?

There are additional considerations beyond experience and expertise, Munowitz said. For example, what is the office ambiance like? A patient should feel comfortable with the cosmetic dentist’s personality and demeanor. The dentist’s staff should be friendly, professional and able to quickly address concerns.

“Cosmetic dentistry treatment can happen over a period of time, so a patient should feel as though they have established a relationship with the dentist and the staff,” she said.

One way to research to find the cosmetic dentist who will be the best fit is to take advantage of initial consultations. Many cosmetic dentists offer free consultations. This provides a great opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for the practice, Munowitz said.

Choosing the right cosmetic dentist may take a bit of time, but in the end, the patient will be happy they put forth the effort, she said.

“Cosmetic dentistry procedures can be life-changing,” Munowitz said. “Some people swear their new smiles got them boyfriends and husbands, or they became more confident and outgoing.”
